A dividend is the distribution of some of a company’s earnings to a class of its shareholders, as determined by the company’s board of directors. Common shareholders of dividend-paying companies are typically eligible if they own the stock before the ex-dividend date.
Not all companies pay dividends but it’s very common to be paid dividends in franchise companies. Holders of Burger King and McDonald’s stock for example regularly receive dividends in proportion to their ownership stake.
